I joined Leadenham residents this weekend to raise awareness of passing horse riders and cyclists wide and slow to improve road safety and avoid near misses.
The campaign raises awareness of The Highway Code which states that motorists should pass horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allow at least 2 metres of space. Motorists should also leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds.
Many thanks to India, who is leading the campaign locally, and everyone involved for highlighting this important issue. The British Horse Society states there were 3,383 incidents last year, of which 66 horses and three riders were tragically killed on the roads so it is vital we raise awareness of The Highway Code and keep everyone safe.
